A tiring day. The main job was dealing with the pond. B helped me to lift the pond plants out. They were all fused together, very heavy and overgrown. The electricity cable to the pump was right through the middle of them. I turned it off and then set about freeing it. It took what seemed like ages, bent over on the side of the pond which felt precarious. Unlike most garden jobs which can't go horribly wrong, I was anxious the whole time not to pierce the cable with my secateurs; even with it turned off, so it wouldn't be dangerous, it would have been very expensive and a right hassle to damage it. Got it done in the end. I stood holding the loose cable, and feeling as though there ought to be some more dramatic result - but what was I expecting, a 24 gun salute?
I picked up the little apples that had fallen, as the trees prepare to concentrate on the main crop. This is the first year I've got round to doing this, before I've just gone over them with teh mower or trampled them in over the next few weeks.
Oh, well done! I HATE that sort of job. It's amazing how quickly pond plants grow, isn't it? One minute they're a cute little tuft of green, the next minute they're a mass of roots and sludge.
ReplyDeleteHow satisfying that you have done the job and it is behind you not something hanging over you that needs doing.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to pictures of the newly cleared out pond.
Hard work I'm sure - but I bet you feel really good today (if a bit achy)
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, I did notice you comment about my sidebar, sorry if I don't always reply at the moment but I assure you I do read yours and everyones comments and appreciate them. Thanks also for your birthday wishes. Pond plants can be a nightmare sometimes and your freeing of the electric cable reminded me of some ivy I was trimming back the other week. It was only by chance that I noticed there was a TV cable running through the middle of it, the job took twice as long to complete because of that. Bob.
ReplyDeleteHere's one trumpet - tarantara! (Times Four.)
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping my apples won't bother with a June drop this year, there are so few of them.

Hmmmm this makes me wonder if I REALLY want a pond or not. Bad enough having to weed, but I don't know that I would like having to clean a pond all the time. Everyone I know that has one is always cleaning them. There is enough to do without out. I am on the fence about it
ReplyDeleteDP - Actually for me the weeding is way more work than cleaning, because just as Bob says, water plants grow extremely quickly - it's like normal plants on fast forward! Yes, I'd think hard if I were you. It's worth it for me because I love seeing the fish, but maybe little fish tank inside might be easier!
